Beanca is a 34 year old Russian Steppe Eagle. She was permanently injured at the age of 2. Her right wing was shattered and the bones were repaired with pins and wires. She is able to fly only short distances, but cannot hunt on her own. Beanca lived with her friend John Barkas for over 30 years. Beanca and John toured the country going to special events and teaching about injured wildlife. Upon John's death she began living with The Wildlife Refuge so she could continue to do educational programs.
Beanca is protected by both US Federal law and the Cherokee Warriors. She is also protected by her own instincts. She doesn't allow anyone other then those she knows to touch her, but she will allow people to stand close to her and have their picture taken with her.
John Barkas was an animal handler for over 40 years. He started with hawks, but has worked with elephants, snakes, lions, tigers, and other animals. His favorite animals were raptors. He worked with many different kinds of eagles over the years, but none for as long as Beanca. For over 32 years they were together. They toured the country, educated people, made commercials, and were quite an influence on the community.
John and his son Ian were welcomed into the Cherokee tribe and named "Spirit Eagle" and "Little Spirit Eagle" by a Black Foot Naming Chief. John was the friend of many tribes and attended many tribal events. He made his living by selling his artwork. He made paintings on natural 'canvas' such as polished stone, and feathers.
John's dream and final life's project was starting The American Wildlife Refuge in the Morrisville NC area. The refuge is primarily intended to be a safe haven for permanently injured raptors and an educational center for people interested in wildlife preservation and animal handling. The refuge and this web site is a testament to his success.
